Climeworks is providing atmospheric CO2 to a large-scale Power-to-Gas storage demonstrator in Troia, Italy, which aims to use surplus renewable energy to generate synthetic gas. It is planned that such gas can be produced when renewables are generating too much, and used to provide energy back to the grid when they are generating too little, helping mitigate the problem of fluctuating renewable energy supply.

The demonstrator is one of three innovative large scale storage concepts being developed under the Horizon 2020 project STORE&GO. The project brings together 27 partners and is coordinated by the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) and sponsored by the European Union (contract number 691797), as well as by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (contract number 15.0333). The overall budget is €28 million.
