Carbon removal technology: our solution to help fight global warming

Climeworks is at the forefront of driving corporate sustainability efforts worldwide.

Climeworks removes CO₂ from the air

We offer carbon removal as a service for businesses and individuals who want to fight climate change. With our service, you can take action on behalf of the planet by permanently removing the CO₂ emissions you can’t reduce.

We design, build, and operate our own direct air capture and storage facilities to remove CO₂ from the air. In addition to our carbon removal technology, we can partner with other suppliers to secure a full portfolio of high-quality solutions for your net-zero strategy.

The Orca plant: the world’s first large-scale DAC+S facility, which we launched in September 2021.
The Mammoth plant: in May 2024, we'll open our second DAC+S facility, the largest worldwide to date.

Why is carbon removal important in the fight against global warming?

To maximize our chances of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, the most urgent task is drastic emissions reductions. However, climate science is clear that only reducing emissions is not enough (IPCC, SBTi).

We need to actively remove CO₂ from the atmosphere to tackle CO₂ emissions that are extremely hard to avoid (residual emissions) or that have accumulated in the atmosphere (historic emissions). Carbon removal technologies like direct air capture neutralize those residual and historic emissions and can enable the world to get to real net zero.

How it works

Direct air capture is a technology that captures CO₂ directly from the air. Climeworks combines its direct air capture technology with permanent underground storage (direct air capture and storage = DAC+S) to lock the air-captured CO₂ away so it can no longer contribute to global warming.

Direct air capture is one of today's most promising carbon removal technologies. We’re continually researching and developing ours with a world-class team of over 150 engineers.

In Iceland, our storage partner Carbfix transports our CO₂ deep underground, where it reacts with basalt rock through a natural process, transforms it into stone, and remains safely stored for over 10,000 years.

All about direct air capture

Iceland offers ideal conditions for direct air capture and storage, but there’s immense potential for this carbon removal technology worldwide. Climeworks is expanding internationally to remove CO2 at megaton and, ultimately, gigaton scale.

In the U.S., we announced three projects as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional DAC Hubs program and were already awarded USD 50m to kickstart one of the Hubs, called Project Cypress. Other promising locations are Canada, Norway, and Kenya, where we collaborate with local partners to explore the development of direct air capture and storage on a large scale.

Climeworks Solutions: our newest offering

To remove CO₂ at the necessary gigaton scales by 2050, the world needs more carbon removal technologies than direct air capture – and we’re committed to accelerating the scale-up of our industry.

With Climeworks Solutions, companies can now secure a holistic portfolio of carbon removals from Climeworks, uniting the best-in-class suppliers across engineered and nature-based approaches. Each portfolio is tailored to companies’ unique needs and can comprise solutions like afforestation/reforestation, biochar, enhanced weathering, or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and always include our own direct air capture technology.
