Familie Wiesner Gastronomie takes new path in climate action with Climeworks

Key take-aways:

  • Familie Wiesner Gastronomie (FWG), a family-owned restaurant business in Switzerland, purchased carbon removal from Climeworks as the first customer from the gastronomy sector.

  • FWG sees carbon removal as an additional step to help fight climate change and protect the planet for future generations, alongside its continuous emissions reductions.

  • On top of the carbon removal agreement, FWG’s customers contribute a small percentage of their online orders to Climeworks' carbon removal service.

FWG regards carbon removal as an additional measure to fight global warming and protect the planet for future generations. With its Swiss-based restaurants Nooch Asian Kitchen, Negishi Sushi Bar, Miss Miu, The Butcher, Outback Lodge, and Kitchen Republic, FWG is the first Climeworks customer from the gastronomy sector.

Reductions first, removals second

FWG invested in Climeworks’ carbon removal service at the beginning of 2024 in addition to reducing its emissions through various measures, such as plant-based alternatives for guests, eliminating plastic, reducing the number of flight goods, working with bike couriers, and using renewable energy. The company aims to reduce its own CO₂ emissions by 10% by the end of 2025 and additionally remove 5% through Climeworks. This is part of the effort to reduce the company's overall carbon footprint by 40% by 2030, compared to 2022, and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Daniel Wiesner, co-lead of strategy and innovation at FWG
Carbon removal is a central issue of climate change mitigation and will be indispensable in achieving climate goals. This measure fits into our sustainability strategy and with Climeworks we can rely on an innovative Swiss partner who is one of the leading companies in the field of carbon removal worldwide.

Companies across industries can engage in carbon removal

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), between 3 and 12 billion tons of CO₂ need to be actively removed from the atmosphere every year by 2050, in addition to unprecedented emissions reductions. For the necessary capacities to be available in the future, companies must take decisive action today. FWG demonstrates that companies from various sectors already purchase carbon removal and can become part of the scale-up of this new industry.

The financial, technology, and consulting industries kick-started the market with pioneering carbon removal agreements. However, cross-sector engagement is needed for permanent carbon removal technologies to scale quickly enough by 2050.

For FWG, the partnership with Climeworks is not only crucial at the corporate level but also part of its efforts to raise awareness about climate change among their guests. Since early March, customers contribute a small percentage of their online orders to Climeworks' carbon removal service, which comes on top of the carbon removal agreement between the two companies. When ordering from FWG’s restaurants, customers enjoy both regional products and take climate action by helping to remove CO₂ from the air.
