Climeworks appoints senior industry advisors to accelerate market growth

Celine Herweijer and Mark Kroese bring leadership experience from two of the world’s largest financial and technology organizations, and will support Climeworks as it accelerates its strategy to scale direct air capture, drive down costs, and deliver carbon removal portfolios for global buyers.

May 12, 2026, | Zurich, Switzerland – Climeworks has appointed Celine Herweijer, former Group Chief Sustainability Officer of HSBC and Mark Kroese, former General Manager of Sustainability Solutions at Microsoft, to its Advisory Board.

Together, they bring decades of experience from organizations that have been early and long‑standing supporters of carbon dioxide removal. Microsoft was one of the first global companies to partner with Climeworks, helping shape the market for durable carbon removal.

As members of the Advisory Board, they will support Climeworks on commercial strategy, customer engagement and market priorities. Drawing on their experience with major corporate buyers, they will help Climeworks respond to evolving customer needs and support companies looking to deploy credible, durable carbon removal.

Celine Herweijer is Vice Chair of the We Mean Business Coalition and formerly served on HSBC’s Group Executive Committee as Group Chief Sustainability Officer. Prior to HSBC, Celine was a partner at PwC and the firm’s Global Sustainability and Innovation Leader. She holds a PhD in climate modelling and policy from Columbia University and brings deep experience of corporate sustainability strategy, sustainable finance, and investment readiness.

Mark Kroese brings long‑standing experience at the intersection of technology and sustainability. He previously served as General Manager for Microsoft Sustainability Solutions and held multiple senior leadership roles at Microsoft. He brings strong expertise in building and positioning carbon removal portfolios for large corporate buyers, particularly in the technology sector.

Their combined expertise strengthens Climeworks’ ability to serve corporate buyers seeking to integrate carbon removal into their sustainability and net-zero strategies. With deep insight from the demand side of the market, they will support Climeworks as it scales diversified carbon removal portfolios alongside the development of the lowest‑cost direct air capture technology.

Christoph Gebald, CEO, Climeworks: “What has always set Climeworks apart is its ability to attract the very best. I am thrilled to welcome Celine and Mark to our Advisory Board. They bring unparalleled experience from organisations that helped pioneer the carbon removal market. Their guidance will be critical as we scale direct air capture, drive costs down, and strengthen our leading carbon removal portfolio service to meet growing corporate demand for durable, high‑integrity solutions.”

Celine Herweijer: “Alongside the energy transition, removing carbon already in the atmosphere at scale is one of the defining challenges ahead - across technology, markets and investment. The next phase for carbon removal will be defined by solutions that are investable within large organizations. Climeworks has played a leading role in building this market, and I look forward to supporting the team in scaling and delivering robust, decision-ready carbon removal portfolios.”

Mark Kroese: “I’m thrilled to join Climeworks as an advisor, especially as the company broadens its scope to provide a comprehensive portfolio of carbon removal options. The leader in DAC is now the leader in complete carbon removal portfolio solutions.  It’s a very exciting time for Climeworks.”
